Important new IAPP resource! "US State AI Governance Legislation Tracker" After generative AI captured the world's attention, it took only a matter of months for U.S. state legislatures to consider responsive legislation. States are not waiting for federal action, instead adopting a remarkably active stance on regulations responding to concerns around many different types of AI systems and contexts. Unpacking the themes of these legislative efforts is an ongoing undertaking. To help keep track of this rapidly changing landscape, the IAPP has published this tracker, which collates legislative activity and reflects emerging themes across AI governance policymaking at the U.S. state level. "On 17 April, the European Data Protection Board adopted its opinion on pay-or-consent models, which found large online platforms' behavioral advertising practices fell short of satisfying the principles of data protection found in the EU General Data Protection Regulation... "The pay-or-consent subscription models are the latest manifestation of the years-long dance between EU regulators and businesses built on the online behavioral advertising business model." NEW ARTICLE from Joe Duball: The U.S. House Committee on Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Data, Innovation and Commerce approved the updated APRA draft on a voice vote 23 May, advancing the bill to full committee consideration. "If the founders were here today, they would know as we know that this digital tyranny is not the American dream. The (American Privacy Rights Act) is an opportunity for a reset," Energy and Commerce Committee Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers said. "Today is not the end of the road, but it is certainly another milestone in giving Americans the privacy rights they want and deserve."
