Dim lights, classical music, a dancer, and a robot on an empty stage. The dancer approaches the robot with subtle curiosity. They meet as if for the first time, communicating through gestures alone, slowly learning about each other.  Welcome to Huang Yi and Kuka, a contemporary dance theatre piece exploring the relationship between man and technology.

Kuka is a robotic arm commonly found in industrial assembly lines. Dancer/Choreographer Huang Yi spent four years developing the show, and as we learn from the show notes, is also Kuka’s programmer. The uniqueness of this creative process is evident in its execution on stage.

舞台上，「庫卡」舉手投足宛如真人，似乎會呼吸、動作有感情，靈活地與舞者肢體互動，流洩出溫暖及惺惺相知的情感。

《黃翊與庫卡》是一部人類與機器人詩意共舞，溫柔對話的作品。擁有像小叮噹般的機器人陪伴身旁，是編舞家黃翊小時候的夢想。2012年發表第一階段後，即獲頒台北數位藝術節首獎。

2017年，《黃翊與庫卡》獲邀擔任TED年度大會開幕演出，黃翊成為首位登上TED的台灣人，並透過鏡頭於全球800家電影院IMAX影廳同步轉播，TED官方釋出的演出影片至今超過全球50萬點閱觀賞，獲得CNN、時代雜誌等國際媒體推崇。

黃翊教「庫卡」如何「跳舞」，1分鐘的動作呈現需要花10幾個小時編寫程式。作品中，舞者與「庫卡」彷彿照鏡子般，互相模仿。機械人在無法即興、無機質的狀態下，卻在繁雜的程式運算中，完成純粹的舞動。

試想，以機械人的視角出發，這個舞台會是什麼風景？現今世界，又會成為怎麼的秩序場域？人與機械是誰學習誰，誰會擁有那最終的制宰權？《黃翊與庫卡》邀請觀者重新思考「人」與「工具」的關係。

Visually stunning in its simplicity, all elements of the production work together effortlessly, taking us on a journey. The piece is sublimely poetic. Yi’s dance is precise and fluid, with its vocabulary rooted in contemporary dance and in everyday gestural language. As his relationship with Kuka develops, the dancer begins to move more like the machine. Kuka’s own movements are so believable and so accurate that the robot seems alive, possessing a personality of its own and even feelings. In one scene in which Kuka is briefly left alone on stage, its gestures so powerfully convey the sadness of loss, I found myself surprised to feel so much empathy with the robot.

Huang Yi and Kuka deal with important themes about the role of technology in our lives and man’s place in the universe – like God, he’s able to give life. Furthermore, the piece opens up a whole new world of possibilities for performance-makers exploring the use of technology on stage, and it is well worth seeing this unique piece.

Huang Yi Studio+

Founded in 2010, is one of the world's few artistic groups that incorporate both human and robotic members. With extensive international tours, the studio has been invited to nearly 20 countries across the Americas, Europe, Asia, and Australia, amassing over a hundred successful performances acknowledged by audiences and critics worldwide. The works exhibit a high level of scientific research. Beyond performance creation, the studio utilizes technological expertise to develop automated audio-described systems for visually impaired audiences in theater, advocating for cultural equality. Huang Yi Studio+ aims to integrate art into people's lives through technology, advancing the development of both technology and art.

出生於臺灣嘉義，創作語彙融合舞蹈肢體、機械、程式、影像等多種領域。人類與工業機器人共舞的《黃翊與庫卡》為黃翊的代表作之一，獲「科技藝術界奧斯卡獎」之稱的奧地利林茲科技藝術節邀演。獲美國舞蹈雜誌評選為「25位最受矚目舞蹈家 25 to Watch」。獲邀擔任國家兩廳院首位駐館藝術家。第56屆文化藝術類十大傑出青年。

Founder and artistic director, choreographer, programmer, dancer｜Huang Yi

Taiwanese dancer, choreographer, inventor, and videographer Huang Yi's pioneering work is steeped in his fascination with the partnership between humans and robots. He interweaves continuous movement with mechanical and multimedia elements to create a form of dance that corresponds with the flow of data, effectively making the performer a dancing instrument. Named by Dance Magazine as one of the "25 to Watch," Huang was immersed in the arts at a young age, spending much of his childhood in his parents' studio, watching them teach tango and learning to paint alongside his father. Huang has been an Artist-in-Residence of the National Theater & Concert Hall and the National Performing Arts Center in Taiwan and is widely considered one of Asia's most prolific choreographers.

Huang's groundbreaking and award-winning work, HUANG YI & KUKA, in which he and his dancers perform alongside an industrial robot he programmed, has opened the Ars Electronica Festival (Austria), TED Conference (Vancouver), and toured globally since 2015, including in Australia, the Americas, Europe, Asia, and the UAE. 

共同創辦人暨舞者｜胡鑑

2007年始，即擔任黃翊幾近全數作品之主要角色至今。2013年，受邀擔任荷蘭籍導演 David Verbeek 之微電影《Immortelle》男主角，入圍鹿特丹影展Spectrum Shorts單元與2013年金馬影展台灣短打系列，電影由肯園國際股份有限公司合資拍攝。2014年，獲邀擔任黃翊工作室共同創辦人。2019年，以編舞作品《有一個地方只有我們兩個人》，自全球5百多組，獲選哥本哈根國際編舞大賽決選，並於松菸Lab新主義發表，溫暖且獨特的語彙質地，深獲觀眾好評。

2021年，創立 HU’s Project 胡式合作社，邁入創作、表演新階段。

Co-founder and Dancer | Hu Chien

Since 2007, Hu Chien has taken on a pivotal role in nearly all of Huang Yi's productions to date. In 2013, he was invited to play the lead role in Dutch director David Verbeek's short film "Immortelle," earning nominations at the Rotterdam Film Festival in the Spectrum Shorts section and in the Taiwan Short Film category at the 2013 Golden Horse Film Festival. The film was co-produced by CANJUNE International Co., Ltd. In 2014, Hu Chien was invited to become a co-founder of the Huang Yi Studio. In 2019, his choreographic piece "A Place Belongs To You and Me" was selected among over 500 entries for the Copenhagen International Choreography Competition, receiving warm praise for its unique and heartfelt artistic expression.

In 2021, he established HU’s Project, entering a new phase of creation and performance.

Hu Chien has performed in various Huang Yi productions, including "SPIN", "Whisper", "Double Yellow Line", "Light", "Lost for Words", "Wicked Fish", "Second Skin", "Huang Yi & Kuka", " "Under the Horizon", "Dune", "A Million Miles Away", "Objects", "Little Ant and Robot", "Ink", "This Life" among others.

舞者｜謝承佑

承佑的肢體特質溫潤流暢、協調性與爆發力兼具。為鄰近年齡層少見，能於技巧與表演詮釋間，擁有自然質地的舞者。2019年加入黃翊工作室，除擔任舞者外，亦擔任黃翊程式設計助理，協助程式維護、安全確保。

2021年，隨團赴法國、西班牙巡演《黃翊與庫卡》，參與演出。

Dancer | Hsieh Cheng-Yu

Cheng-Yu possesses a warm, fluent, and coordinated physicality coupled with explosive energy. He stands out in his age group for being a dancer who naturally embodies both technical prowess and expressive performance. Joining the Huang Yi Studio in 2019, apart from his role as a dancer, Cheng-Yu was also Huang Yi's programming assistant, aiding in program maintenance.

In 2021, he toured France and Spain with the production "Huang Yi & KUKA," participating in the performances.

He has performed in various works including Huang Yi's "Huang Yi & KUKA," "Little Ant and Robot" "Ink," "This Life," and "Voices," as well as in Hu Chien's piece "A Place Belongs To You and Me" among others.

2023年，演出黃翊作品《墨》，在黑川良一詮釋董陽孜書法線條的動態影像間，怡芬細膩精確的肢體與內斂的表演詮釋，令觀眾印象深刻。於《此生》中，充滿感情與肢體張力的表達，觸動了許多觀眾。

Dancer | Dai Yi-Fen

In 2023, Dai Yi-Fen performed in Huang Yi's work "Ink," delivering a performance that left a lasting impression with her delicate and precise movements interlaced with understated expressions, while interpreting the dynamic imagery of Dong Yang-Tze's calligraphy lines presented by Ryoichi Kurokawa. Her emotionally charged and physically tense expression in "This Life" deeply moved the audience.

In recent years, she has appeared in works including Huang Yi's "This Life", "Ink", and "Little Ant and Robot", Hu Chien's "Red", Liu Yiling's "13+1" , Leigh Warren's "Green T", Zhang Xiaoxiong's "Rachmaninoff Elegy", Yaniv Abraham's "Under The Weather", among others.

2023年，黃翊作品《此生》中，兆豊充滿複雜情感與爆發力的詮釋，感動在場觀眾。並於《墨》中與怡芬呈現穩定流暢的雙人詮釋。

In 2023, Chen Chao-Li showcased a performance filled with complex emotions and explosive energy in Huang Yi's piece "This Life", touching the audience profoundly. Additionally, in "Ink," he and Dai Yi-Fen presented a fluid duet.

In recent years, he has performed in Huang Yi's works "Ink," "This Life," and "Little Ant and Robot", Hu Chien's "Red", among others. He has also presented his own creations including "Happy Birthday," "Love Delusion Syndrome", "N N", "Shallow Rules", and more.
